Spread of western education

1.    English Seminary – first English medium school established in Guwahati in 1835.

2.    Murari Chand College was established in Sylhet in 1892 by Raja Girish Chandra Roy. 

3.    Cotton College was established in 1901.

Newspapers and journals

1.    Orunodoi – first Assamese monthly “devoted to religion, science and general intelligence” was published in 1846 by the Baptist missionaries from their own press established at Sibsagar in 1844.

2.    Assam Bilasini ( Satradhikar Duttadev Goswami, 1871), Assam News (Hemchandra Barua), Assam Bandhu (Gunabhiram Barua), Mou (Balinarayan Bora and Haliram Bora).

3.     Jonaki – published in 1889 by Asomiya Bhaxar Unnati Xadhini Xobha. First editor – Chandrakumar Agarwala.

Language issue

1.    Bengali was made official language from 1836-73. 

2.    Baptist missionaries enriched Assamese literature.

3.    Orunodoi was published 1846.

4.    Atmaram Sarma’s Dharmapustak – first printed Assamese book.

5.    First published Assamese dictionary by Miles Bronson. (Sri Jaduram Barua had compiled a dictionary earlier but it was not published).

6.    First Assamese Grammar by W Robinson.


 

Contribution of Assamese scholars

1.    Aanandaram Dhekial Phukan (“A Native”) – A few remarks on Assamese Language. He also wrote “Axomiya Lorar Mitra”.

4.    Asamiya Bhaxar Unnati Sadhini Sabha – 1888 – Laxminath Bezbarua, Chandra Kumar Agarwala, Hem Chandra Goswami, etc.

Political Association

1.    Jorhat Sarvajanik Sabha – 1884 – Jgannath Barua (secretary), Naranarayan Singha (founder president) • Tezpur Ryot Sabha – 1884 – Haribilas Agarwala

2.    Shillong Association, Nogaon Rayat Sabha, Upper Assam Association, etc.

3.    Assam Association Founded in 1903 by a group of intellectuals led by Manik Chandra Barua.

·       Headquarters – Guwahati and Gauripur

·       First session – Dibrugarh in 1905.

·       First president – Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua

·       Vice President – Jagannath Barua

·       General Secretary – Manik Chandra Barua

·       Manik Chandra Barua was succeeded by

·       Ghanasyam Barua in 1915 and by Tarunram Phukan in 1918 as General Secretary.

·       The Association became defunct with the formation of the Assam Provincial Congress in 1921.
